Why Is HVAC System Sizing Important?

It is the Contractor’s responsibility to ensure proper system sizing. However, many contractors only check the nameplate on the existing system for sizing then quote based on the exact match or even worse, one that is larger. Other methods include “rule of thumb” numbers based only on the square footage of the home!

THESE ARE NOT CORRECT SIZING METHODS AND ARE NOT IN THE CONSUMERS BEST INTEREST!

Correct Sizing Methods

Contractors should consider many factors when sizing your new system correctly. Key factors that should be taken into account when properly sizing your heating and cooling system:

  • Local climate
  • Size
  • Shape and orientation of your home
  • Insulation levels
  • Window area
  • Location and Type
  • Air Infiltration Rates
  • Number of occupants
  • Other sources of heat gain (i.e. appliances)

Proper sizing and installation are key elements to a comfortable heating and air system. Improper unit location, lack of insulation, and improper duct installation can greatly diminish efficiency as well.

When you are looking to find a company to purchase and install a new heating and air system properly, make sure you have a company that stands by the requirement of the International Mechanical Code----

International Code Requires MANUAL J®

An ACCA procedure covers the method for calculating heating and cooling requirements (load calculation) for single-family detached homes.
